Today everyone
is talking about SOPA. Me too...
I was once asked: "What is freedom of speech?" by one of my
students. I remember I answered her that it was the RIGHT of all sentient
beings to express themselves publicly WITHOUT fear of being REPRESSED by ANYONE
ANYWHERE. Today, I add, and the best place to exercise this RIGHT is the
INTERNET. So I wonder why someone would try to cut off the branches of FREEDOM
and LIBERTY that have flourished on the net. The answer is simple, at least to
me: If someone does not let you grow culturally, then that person or group can
CONTROL you more easily. If one of my 6º graders would ask me today why I do
not support SOPA I would say: because it jails freedom of speech in a glass
tower where, only, the CEO of a small numbered business can control it so that
the world would live in fear. We don't need anyone to tell us how to develop
the WORLD WIDE WEB because it develops alone. We the artist who nourish from
the shared content online will surely find another way of expressing and
sharing our voices but that is not the point, the point is that BIG
CORPORATIONS cannot amputate our limbs and then let us here to rot and die
while they profit from our blood. Culture is the engine that has driven mankind
throughout HISTORY and if we start impaling the mediums in which CULTURE
NOURISH then we as a society will fall in another DARK AGE. We watch Star Wars
and we cannot believe that there are people as bad as DARTH SIDIOUS who wants
to conquer the universe for his own dirty profit, but those people exist. They
are promoting SOPA. Unfortunately for them, there is not only light and
darkness, out there, in the real world there exist millions of colours, and so
many as people are in the EARTH. So we FIGHT, with the tools we have. So we
SHOUT, SCREAM, YELL! Because the most important RIGHT we have is FREEDOM OF
SPEECH because if someone does not let us speak our minds freely, then we
explode. And then, we call for REVOLUTION! That is why I support FREEDOM OF
SPEECH but no SOPA. Pink Floyd was right:
"We don't need no thought control
No
dark sarcasm in the classroom..." (Another Brick in the Wall, part 2,
The Wall, Pink Floyd)
In the streets, we fight. In the classrooms, we fight. In the TV, we
fight. In the INTERNET, we FIGHT! We fight because no one can stop us in our
domains. THE INTERNET IS OURS, NOT CORPORATE. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, THEN LEARN
FROM US: WE DON'T LIKE SO MANY THINGS YOU DO, BUT STILL WE DON'T BAN YOU FROM
DOING THEM, WE TRY TO TEACH YOU BETTER! LEARN AND BUILD!
PEACE!
